Breaking Limits with 911 Body Instead of 718, ‘Porsche 911 GT4 R’ Unveiled
German high-performance car manufacturer Porsche is unveiling its new customer motorsport model, the ‘911 GT4 R’. Instead of the previous GT4 customer motorsport model based on the 718 Cayman, it is designed around the 911 platform to meet GT4 regulations. The new 911 GT4 R is equipped with a 4-liter six-cylinder naturally aspirated boxer engine producing 520 horsepower and is scheduled to debut in 2027.
The FIA-homologated GT4 class is a racing category established by motorsport promoter SRO. It serves as the entry-level class for FIA-homologated GT racing, with lower operating costs than the higher-tier GT3 category. GT4 races are held in various countries around the world, and domestically, GT4-class races are contested in the CJ Super Race Championship.
The new 911 GT4 R is designed based on the 992.2 version of the 911 GT3 model. Compared to the previous 718 Cayman-based Clubsport model, it features a higher-output engine, a wider track width, and precision-performance electronic equipment. These elements provide an advantage in driving performance and stability amid fierce motorsport competition.
The high-revving 4-liter six-cylinder boxer engine is based on the unit used in the 911 GT3, with race-suitable tuning applied. It delivers 520 horsepower and maximum torque of 47.92 kgf·m, though actual output is adjusted according to the Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations set by race promoters. Engine power is transmitted through a motorsport-spec sequential 6-speed gearbox operated by steering wheel paddle shifters and a quad-disc clutch.
To comply with GT4 regulations, the body has a track width approximately 1 inch (25.4 mm) narrower than the base 992.2 911 GT3. Additionally, the wheel fastening structure changes from center-lock to a 5-lug design. A racing suspension with 2-channel adjustable dampers and three selectable spring rate settings is also provided.
The exterior and structure of the body make active use of elements from the 911 Cup model. The rear wing is adjustable across 11 angles. Some exterior body panels use natural fiber-reinforced plastic and epoxy resin materials.
The interior layout is also similar to the 911 Cup model. Essential driving information is provided to the driver via a 10.3-inch color display, and a GPS-linked data logger system is also installed. Additionally, mounts for ballast weights required for BoP application are provided inside the vehicle.
Since its first entry into the GT4 class in 2016, Porsche has produced more than 1,500 GT4 race cars to date. The new 911 GT4 R, developed based on this technical foundation, will be delivered to global motorsport customers starting in 2027.
