Volkswagen revealed the forerunners of the new California Beach and ID. California Cruise campers.
The live premiere of the German brand’s concepts will take place at the end of August 2026 at the Caravan Salon exhibition, which will be held in Düsseldorf (Germany).
The German manufacturer showcased the current Volkswagen Multivan T7 minivan back in June 2021, and in 2024 the family was expanded with the California camper. Now the company has prepared a new variant – the Volkswagen California Beach, which will officially debut at the end of this month at the Caravan Salon exhibition, albeit only as a concept.
A special feature of the Volkswagen California Beach, developed jointly with Stuff Bubble, will be two conceptual modules created specifically for this camper. These include a foldable inflatable kitchen that easily integrates into the existing mounting system of the California Beach luggage shelves. Its dimensions are approximately 120 x 44 x 47.5 cm.
Among the main advantages of such a kitchen with a built-in closed water circuit are its light weight (less than 10 kg) and ease of installation. For instance, when more free space is needed, such as for transporting sports equipment, the kitchen “elements” can simply be temporarily removed from the camper. The separate design also allows the kitchen to be freely used both inside the camper and outside, for example, during camping or outdoor recreation.
In turn, the module that transforms into a double bed weighs 12 kg, with a sleeping surface of 200 x 134 cm. It is based on a multi-layer breathable construction with various configuration options. The company noted that even with the bed installed in the cabin, the Volkswagen California Beach still retains enough space for relaxation, cooking, or luggage storage. In this configuration, up to four people can be accommodated in the cabin.
For now, the press service of the German brand noted that during the exhibition, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Stuff Bubble will gather customer feedback on the concept: this data will help determine future development. As for the production prospects of such a California Beach camper, it seems premature to discuss them for now, although the manufacturer may still borrow certain solutions in the future.
The Germans also plan to show a concept at the Düsseldorf exhibition called the Volkswagen ID. California Cruise. It is known to be based on the fully electric ID. Buzz minivan. For now, the company noted that the world premiere of this concept will be a step “on the path to creating a completely new generation of fully electric campers, which will be gradually introduced up until 2028.” Presumably, this development has a higher chance of reaching production.
So far, the manufacturer has published only one sketch of the ID. California Cruise. It depicts an electric vehicle with three recognizable signature elements on the rear pillars, a tailgate opening upward, and inside, apparently, a bed is unfolded with shelves located beneath it. A table and folding chairs can also be seen, but it is unclear whether this camper has a kitchen in any form.
Meanwhile, back at the end of June 2026, it became known that the Volkswagen ID. Buzz had been turned into a camper using the Good-Night package, which includes, among other things, a bed frame, a foldable mattress measuring 2.0 x 1.2 meters, window darkening curtains, and a folding table and pair of chairs.
