The newest Volkswagen ID.Era 5S sedan: interior declassified

Volkswagen is preparing to launch a new hybrid four-door sedan. As expected, the cabin features separate displays for the instrument cluster and multimedia system, while transmission control is handled by a steering column stalk.

The certification for the Volkswagen ID.Era 5S sedan appeared in the catalog of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in late May, after which the company itself revealed the exterior of the new model in official images. Now the interior has also been shown. Recall that ID.Era is a completely new lineup from the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture. The first model in the family was the large three-row crossover VW ID.Era 9X, with a five-seat SUV VW ID.Era 8X also on the way. The vehicles are created specifically for China, taking into account the preferences of the local audience.

As expected, the sedan gets a standard multimedia tablet, while the VW ID.Era 9X crossover already comes with a dual display as standard. A fairly large instrument display is mounted in front of the driver. Moreover, in the sedan, both screens are “attached” to the minimalist dashboard. The Volkswagen ID.Era 5S also features a two-spoke steering wheel. There is no conventional gear selector – transmission control is handled by a steering column stalk. On the center tunnel there is a wireless charging pad and a pair of open cupholders. Buyers will be able to choose between light or dark upholstery.

The exterior design of the four-door is styled in the same key as the crossovers. The sedan also has a smooth “nose,” two-tier headlights, and a full-width light bar. Active shutters are located in the lower part of the front bumper. The turquoise accent lighting indicates the presence of an autopilot, although unlike the ID.Era family SUVs, the sedan does not have a lidar above the windshield.

The Volkswagen ID.Era 5S measures 4836 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, 1505 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2766 mm. The model is available with 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels.

The four-door is a plug-in hybrid. The ID.Era 5S powertrain includes a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine (109 hp) and one electric motor producing 177 hp. Information about the battery is still unavailable. However, SAIC Volkswagen previously stated that the sedan can travel 160 km on electric power alone under the CLTC cycle, with a combined range of over 2000 km.
