Tata Sierra crossover gets new internals and all-wheel drive
Indian company Tata Motors has launched the electric version of the Sierra. This crossover is available with rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. Two battery options are offered.
The name Tata Sierra was once used in India for a body-on-frame three-door SUV. But now it is a regular crossover with a unibody construction. The production crossover with the revived Sierra name debuted in its home country at the end of last year with a naturally aspirated 1.5 Revotron petrol engine (106 hp) and a turbocharged Hyperion four-cylinder of similar displacement (160 hp), as well as a 1.5 Kryojet turbodiesel (118 hp). At the same time, even before the premiere of the production SUV, it was announced that an electric version would be offered. So now the “green” Tata Sierra EV crossover has gone on sale.
Externally, the electric modification differs slightly from the “traditional” crossover in the front-end design. Under the narrow LED strip that serves as daytime running lights, instead of a black insert, the Tata Sierra EV has a smooth body-colored panel. In addition, the bumper has been updated. The electric crossover comes with 18- or 19-inch wheels, while the standard model also offers 17-inch ones.
The Tata Sierra EV is taller than the hydrocarbon-powered crossover: 1750 mm versus 1715 mm. The other dimensions are identical. Length is 4340 mm, width is 1841 mm, wheelbase is 2730 mm. The trunk volume is 622 liters, and under the hood lid the Sierra EV has an additional compartment, which depending on the version holds 35 or 55 liters.
Inside, the EV crossover replicates the “traditional” Sierra. In “basic” trims, the five-seat cabin features a panel consisting of two displays: a 10.25-inch instrument screen and a 12.3-inch touchscreen for multimedia. In higher-end versions, a three-screen panel is used (plus a 12.3-inch passenger display).
Standard equipment also includes LED lighting, climate control, a rearview camera, and cruise control. Rich trims add a panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, surround-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping systems.
The electric crossover is offered in three versions. The cheapest is called the Tata Sierra EV 63; this crossover has an electric motor on the rear axle producing 238 hp, paired with a 63 kWh battery, giving a range of 535 km on the local cycle. The “mid-range” Tata Sierra EV 75 is also rear-wheel drive, but its motor is weaker at 209 hp. However, this crossover is equipped with a 75 kWh battery, boosting range to 665 km. The top-tier Tata Sierra EV 75 QWD features dual-motor all-wheel drive: a 140-hp motor at the front and a 209-hp one at the rear. As the name suggests, the all-wheel-drive crossover is fitted with a 75 kWh battery, offering a range of 624 km. It is worth noting that the “traditional” Tata Sierra crossover is still exclusively front-wheel drive.
Excluding taxes, the Tata Sierra EV will cost between 1,879,000 and 2,648,000 rupees, which is equivalent to roughly 1.55 million to 2.2 million rubles at the current exchange rate. For comparison, the “hydrocarbon” Tata Sierra crossover currently starts at 1,149,000 rupees (about 951,000 rubles).
