Porsche 911 GT4 R revealed – the Cayman’s dead and Porsche needs a replacement racer

Porsche has replaced its track-only Cayman GT4 Clubsport with the new 911 GT4 R, based on the 911 due to the absence of a new Cayman GT4. Since entering the GT4 class in 2016, Porsche has built over 1,500 Cayman GT4 race cars, and the 911 GT4 R aims to maintain this revenue stream. It features a wider track, more power, and benefits from Cup car development. The car retains the 911 GT3’s 4.0-litre flat-six engine, producing up to 512bhp and 347lb ft, but with 53.7mm airflow restrictors in GT4 spec, output is reduced to 426bhp. Power is delivered via a sequential six-speed paddle-operated gearbox, compared to the Cayman’s 3.8-litre engine with 419bhp and PDK transmission. Chassis changes include narrower one-inch wheels with five-bolt hubs, dual-adjustable dampers, three spring rate options, and Brembo steel discs. GT4-class cars target around 1,300kg with low downforce and modest power, subject to Balance of Performance rules. Body and aerodynamics, including an adjustable rear wing with 11 positions, are borrowed from the 911 Cup car. The 911 GT4 R will debut in the 2027 motorsport season, priced at £228,386 plus VAT in the UK.
